Providing programs at every level of the business to achieve our SHIELD Program objective.
Decmil understands that the success of the SHIELD Program relies on providing training and development programs for personnel at every level of the business.
The various SHIELD Program training packages aim to support our personnel to deliver work performance which reflects the behaviours, attitudes and actions of the SHIELD Charter.
Specific SHIELD training programs have also been developed to provide interested personnel with a career pathway in workplace safety and health.
THE ‘BUDDY’ SYSTEM
Through the Decmil Induction and Orientation Program new starters receive a comprehensive understanding of the business. The ‘buddy’ system built into this program ensures that new team members are supported as they settle into their new role. The program also provides a review process that is aligned with the Decmil performance management system to ensure knowledge retention and to determine the success of the induction and orientation program in imparting required behavioural expectations. The program allows for peer review, empowering work crews to have an input into whether new starters are the right fit for the work group they are assigned to.
HSE TRAINEESHIPS
A HSE Advisor Traineeship provides long-term Decmil employees with a career opportunity within the field of health, safety and environment. The company advertises these roles internally and encourages all individuals keen to pursue a career in HSE to apply. The traineeship program is also a potential career progression for Decmil SHIELD ‘Natural Leaders’ (Elected Employee Safety Representatives) and enables the business to develop HSE Professionals from within who have the right attitude and desire to facilitate the SHIELD Program onsite.
EMPLOYEE SAFETY REPRESENTATIVES
Nominations for Employee Safety Representatives are requested at every Decmil work site. The development of Elected Employee Safety Representatives not only includes statutory 5-day training, but also Peer Support, Fatigue Management and Safe Spine Leader training. Elected Safety Representatives are also provided with opportunities to attend safety representative industry forums and training (IFAP), as well as attendance at annual WorkSafe Expos.
WORKPLACE TRAINERS & ASSESSORS
Every Decmil work site has staff with Certificate IV Training and Assessment qualifications aligned with a Registered Training Organisation who are responsible
for conducting Verification of Competency (VoC) assessments and assisting with the close-out of any training needs. VoC assessments include training packages that exceed simple competency requirements, but also require competency in preventative maintenance and specific workplace procedural requirements specific to the assessment being undertaken.
