Recognising and rewarding those individuals or work groups that consistently exceed workplace safety and health targets and objectives set.
When individuals adopt the SHIELD Program values and behaviours expected for themselves and those around them they are ‘rewarded’ each day with the capacity to return home in the same condition they presented for work and can continue to enjoy ‘what matters most’ to them.
The SHIELD Program recognises and rewards individuals and teams whose workplace safety and health performance levels consistently maintain and exceed the high standards in place.
When this occurs there are a number of avenues available to measure this strong performance and celebrate these achievements.
STAFF PROGRAM
- A ‘SHIELD Leader board’ is posted on the DECNET Homepage and includes all Decmil staff (salaried personnel) and SHIELD ‘Natural Leaders’ (Elected Employee Safety and Health Representatives).
- Performance targets have been established across all job roles recognising the impact that all salaried roles have on the safety and health attitudes and behaviours of the workforce.
- A ‘CEO Award’ will be presented to the individual that tops the ‘SHIELD Leader board’ overall for the six month reporting period.
PROJECT PERFORMANCE
- Project (workplace) performance is also reported, based on a combination of results from SHIELD program implementation scorecard audits (every six months) and project personnel’s SHIELD scores/performance against targets as reported on the ‘SHIELD Leader board. Projects must achieve corporate safety and health targets as well to receive formal recognition.
- Projects will be recognised with a trophy, social event and charity donation for the highest SHIELD program implementation scorecard audit result every six months.
- A ‘Managing Director’s Award’ for recognition of the Project Manager and their Safety Manager responsible for the best combined project and individual HSE performance overall for the six month reporting period.
- Outside of these scheduled events projects regularly undertake milestone award ceremonies recognising key project achievements.
WAGES PROGRAM
- All wage employees participate in the SHIELD reward and recognition program with the Project Management team responsible for recognising wages employees who display outstanding commitment to health and safety by issuing them with a SHIELD Recognition card. Recognition is aligned to the SHIELD Charter principles.
- Project Management team members will record the specific actions or behaviours warranting the card and pass this on to the Project Safety Committee to vote on the top three SHIELD Recognition cards received for the month.
- The Committee votes on the top three achievements for the month and SHIELD Program gifts are presented at a whole-of-worksite pre-start meeting.
- The person with the most votes for the month will have their Card forwarded to the Corporate HSE Department and the SHIELD Leadership Team vote on a final top three for the six month reporting period.
Winners and all nominees for the reward and recognition programs listed above are invited to attend the Decmil mid-year or end of year corporate function where their achievements will be formally recognised and rewarded by the business. It is important that safety leaders are recognised at all levels of the business.
PROMOTIONS
Workplace safety and health promotions are organised during high-risk periods in the calendar year, such as Easter and Christmas when personnel are likely to take extended breaks and their attention to works at hand can be diverted both leading up to, and returning from these holiday periods. Various recognition and rewards will be available to individuals and work groups that maintain the greatest focus on their safety and health during these periods with rewards such as premium tickets to AFL games.
