Nui Nui alternative wharf
Project Service: Government infrastructure
Client: Government of Western Australia
Location: Indian Ocean, 2600 km north west of Perth
Start Date: 2002
Completion Date: 2003
This project involved the construction of an alternate port facility to service ships coming to the
island during specific times of the year when the main port is unavailable due to inclement
weather.
The scope of work involved removing 10,000 cubic metres of rock and replacing it with imported
fill.
In addition, 3,000 cubic metres of structural concrete was poured and 3,000 square metres of
precast concrete panels were poured on the island then erected around the face of the wharf.
This provided logistical challenges due to the location of the construction site and required a
high level of planning to avoid risks to plant, human resources and the environment.
