13/12/2011 - $30m airstrip to help Fortescue gain altitude
Decmil Australia Managing Director Ray Sputore believes the civil contract to design and construct a CASA compliant circa $30 million airstrip for Fortescue Metals Group fits well with Decmil’s capacity to deliver a large range of civil contracts for the mining, resources, oil and gas and government sectors.
“We have a growing civil workforce in excess of 200 who have been delivering over $450 million of civil works in the state’s northwest for the past three years and this contract provides added impetus to the growth and diversification strategy for Decmil Australia,” Mr Sputore said.
Fortescue Metals Group recently announced Decmil Australia was successful in its bid to build the airstrip that will support the Group on its T155 Chichester Expansion Project located in Christmas Creek.
Commencing in January with a forecast completion date of the second quarter of 2012, Decmil will design and construct a sealed airstrip suitable for aircraft including the A320-200. In addition Decmil will design and construct related buildings and service facilities necessary for the operation of this busy remote facility.
“I’m also pleased with the win as it demonstrates Decmil Australia’s strength of its client relationships. We’re currently ahead of schedule in completing stage two of a 1,600 person resort-style village for Fortescue and it has been the quality of work and focus of our people that gives them confidence we will continue to deliver the same strong results in other areas of their business,” Mr Sputore said.
“Our civil capability provides blue-chip clients with more choice when selecting a contractor to manage their projects. Decmil Australia continues to target large civil projects in Western Australia and Queensland and our dedicated civil teams can look forward to some exciting project challenges ahead,” Mr Sputore said.
