Shielding staff from Safety and Health risks

Jeremy Knowles, Corporate HSE Manager at Decmil Australia, is behind a number of high-level safety and health initiatives designed to build on the HSE culture within the organisation and drive safety standards across all Decmil work sites.

Jeremy discusses Decmil’s current and ongoing safety and health initiatives, addressing the key facets of the various programs.

“Safety and health have been integral parts of Decmil’s operations throughout its 30 year history. My job has been to build on previous successes and to focus on ensuring safety remains a core value of the Company’s culture.

“We continue to operate a ‘Zero Harm’ policy at Decmil – which applies to the interaction we have with our people, the environment and the communities in which we operate.

“With the focus on open communication, we actively listen to our partners and employees in an effort to continuously improve our procedures and practices. We encourage our employees to develop a strong commitment to their personal safety and to protect those around them.

“We recently initiated a new safety and health program called ‘SHIELD’. The program stands for Safety and Health In Every Level at Decmil, and is being used to really drive personal responsibility for safety across the business.

The program, launched in March this year, features 10 key elements that are programmed to be completed throughout this year.

The first is a ‘Personal and Leadership commitment’ segment which has been incorporated into Decmil’s induction program. It aims to encourage employees to share information about themselves and address why safety is so important in the workplace and at home – tying personal safety to what matters most to individuals (i.e. family and friends) and exploring the psychology of why people come to work.

“Managers at all levels are asked to create a 10 point action plan to review safety and health practices on site, with progress reviewed by Executive Management quarterly.

“We also value the importance of recognising and rewarding outstanding safety and health practices and initiative within our business and have created a program that is aligned with our values of Investment, Integrity and Innovation.  Additionally, an annual award has been established to recognise the most outstanding project that demonstrates the highest level of safety and health compliance.”
