Informing our workforce of workplace safety and health issues, and empowering them to take responsibility.

For success the SHIELD Program must establish strong two-way communication and consultation processes with all individuals and teams across all projects and disciplines.  It is vital that everyone is kept informed of current and relevant workplace safety and health issues across the business and learn from any reported events.

Through consultation, communication and empowerment Decmil provides its workforce responsibility and buy-in to workplace safety and health related issues.

Keeping the flow of HSE information moving relies on a number of systems including:

HSE ALERTS

Through the SHIELD section of the Decmil intranet and supported by email notifications, HSE alerts and related information are sent rapidly throughout the business.

HSE Alerts are sourced and provided either externally from clients and/or industry organisations or internally by Project HSE personnel in response to reported potential high to extreme risk events. Each Decmil work site is required to review their operations and report back on actions required to be implemented to prevent similar events at their site. This information is recorded in the risk register for the business and the work site.

SHIELD WEB CONTENT

Families and friends of Decmil staff have the opportunity to learn and share in our safety culture through our public website.

Information that can be found on the Decmil website will include work sponsored social events, reward and recognition recipients as well as health and safety related events.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Each quarter Decmil undertakes a road-show to all work sites featuring an extraordinary person who shares their life experiences and achievements.  These sessions highlight how a person or team, through discipline, clear goal setting and a flexible and robust risk management approach were able to achieve outstanding results or overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.

INCIDENT REPORTING & INVESTIGATION

The Decmil Incident Reporting and Investigation Program empowers work groups to take ownership for events that involve their members, or occur in their work area and share the outcomes with the wider project team.

In the event of an incident the work crew immediately stop and conduct an incident review facilitated by their supervisor with support by a HSE Advisor using TapRoot© Root Cause Analysis materials. When completed the supervisor presents a summary to the Decmil workforce at an extraordinary pre-start session the following shift.

AUTHORITY TO STOP WORK

An ‘Authority to Stop Work’ is provided to every worker and is specified on the Decmil Take 5 booklet. This authority is endorsed with the Managing Director’s signature and empowers every staff member to stop a job, theirs or a workmates, if they believe that the activity is unsafe.

HSE PROFESSIONALS

HSE Professionals play an important part in championing the SHIELD Program across Decmil’s work sites.  Conferences are held every six months for this group to review and provide regular feedback on the
success of the Program. Conference venues rotate every six months from head office to the sites to enable sharing and learning around specific initiatives at both these different levels.

PEER-ON-PEER OBSERVATION PROGRAM

Decmil provides a ‘Peer on Peer’ observation program to encourage people to broaden their safety focus outside of actions relating directly to their safety and health and to include consideration for the safety and health of their workmates. Supported with training, this program is a core aspect of the established Decmil Behavioural Observation program.
